Flight operations to Mthatha have resumed Posted on 19 February 2019 After the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA) downgraded Mthatha Airport as a consequence of negative audit findings, Airlink and SA Express will once again resume flight operations at the airport after almost a month of suspension. Airlink resumed their flight operations between O.R Tambo International Airport and Mthatha Airport yesterday. The airline’s flight operations began with a 37-seat Embraer 135 regional jet. The flights will operate as an early morning and late afternoon return service each weekday. Weekend flights will include a Saturday morning service and an afternoon flight on Sundays. More flights will be included once the route normalises again. SA Express (SAX) will resume its operations tomorrow, 21 February. Flights will operate daily between O.R Tambo International Airport and Mthatha Airport from Sunday to Friday with the intention to grow the number of flights over the next few weeks. Flights leaving O.R Tambo International Airport will depart at 3pm and arrive in Mthatha at 4:40pm. Returning flights will depart from Mthatha at 5:10pm and arrive in Johannesburg at 6:40pm. Mthatha has also been upgraded by SACAA to a level-four airport, reinstating all its operating rights for passenger airlines.
