The allocated area where the buildings will be located was previously a shaded carport parking area, on the northern side of the airport. Two of the buildings will be used for the head office for Airport Company South Africa (ACSA) as it’s current base is in Bedfordview, Midrand. Bongiwe Pityi-Vokwana, the airport’s general manager said the final building will be available to rent, with facilities designed to attract local communities, like a gym, canteen and creche. The developments will be designed in a way that creates a boulevard at the international departure level, with buildings that open onto a street-style atmosphere, equipped with restaurants, corner cafés and bars, to create an energetic atmosphere. Accessibility from the Gautrain station and nearby hotels will be easily reachable with pedestrian-friendly connections to the international terminal building. This development and the future revamps will accommodate the increase in growing passenger demand and to upgrade the midfield cargo facilities, so that annually, a total of two million tonnes of air cargo can be accommodated.
