Giraffe stranded on island in Kruger dies

Posted on 6 February 2019

A giraffe in the Kruger National Park has sadly died after being trapped on an island for days. The animal had sought protection on the small island, located in the Olifants River, after severe rains occurred in the park.

It was first spotted on 31 January and was found dead on Sunday, 3 February. SANParks had stated that it was aware of the situation the giraffe was in and would keep an eye out on the animal.

SANParks however had also said that there would be no interference as it was a ‘natural occurrence’ and that the giraffe would be left to leave the island on its own. When the animal was discovered dead, SANParks said ‘As per our founding principles to let nature take its course, the carcass will be left in the same position to continue the natural process.’

The animal’s story has been widely followed on various social media platforms and with the passing of the giraffe, SANParks has requested that visitors do not congest the bridge overlooking the carcass.
