5 plane interiors to make your eyes pop

Posted on 28 January 2019

Here in South Africa, we have the bright orange Mango planes and quirky green Kulua aircraft to brighten up our skies, but when it comes to the interior of these planes the design could have been a little more imaginative. Whether it’s to your taste or not, here are five airlines with more interior decorating flair than our local airlines.

1. Hello Kitty, Eva Air

Eva Air’s Hello Kitty planes are decorated from head to toe with the much-loved cartoon character’s image. The popular Taiwanese carrier’s themed planes are painted with Hello Kitty characters on the outside, while the cabin features Hello Kitty branded pillows, serviettes. Hello Kitty-shaped food is also served on board for a fully immersive experience.

Peach Airlines’ planes are brightly coloured inside and out, with a coat of bright pink and purple paint on the exterior and purple seats on the inside. In the Tweet above, US aviation journalist John Walton seemed tickled pink that his hair matched the decor.

3. Iceland Air

Iceland Air’s unique lighting is meant to imitate the Northern Lights. Watch as the colours change and dance across the cabin ceiling, creating a relaxing atmosphere.

4. Star Wars, ANA

Whoever came up with the idea of branding an aircraft with a Star Wars theme was a genius. ANA has several planes covered with different Star Wars symbols and the insides of its headrests are themed as well. Trekkies may be jealous, as to the best of our knowledge, there are no Star Trek-themed planes.

Belgium carrier Brussels Airlines has a fleet of five quirkily decorated planes – including one called Aerosmurf, decorated inside and out in Smurf paraphernalia. One of the others, dubbed Rackham (after Rackham’s Treasure), has Tin Tin on the exterior, while another is a is known as the Tomorrowland plane. For seven year’s running, Brussels Airlines has organized party flights from all over the world to bring festival-goers to Tomorrowland music festival in the Belgian town of Boom.
