Cape Town voted world’s best city

Posted on 13 December 2018

UK publication the Telegraph recently ran a survey to see which city in the world its readers consider the best, and Cape Town came out winning.

Held in London, the 2018 Telegraph Travel Awards survey elicited over 45,000 reader responses. Cape Town was voted the ‘Best City’ for the sixth consecutive year, with Tokyo coming in at second place and Vancouver in third place. South Africa was also voted second in the category for ‘Best Country’ – up from third place in 2017 and narrowly missing out to New Zealand which took the top spot.

‘We can reveal that the greatest city in the world is a coastal gem, lying in the shadow of a cloud-hugged mountain. Here wine flows, penguins waddle and – not too far away – majestic beasts roam,’ read the Telegraph’s online article.

South Africa also got the nod at the Family Traveller Awards, where it was highly-commended in the ‘Best Long-Haul Destination for Families’ category. This year, a record 54,000 of the general public voted for their favourite family-friendly travel operators, destinations, attractions, and accommodations.

South African Tourism Hub Head for UK & Ireland Tolene Van der Merwe says, ‘We’re delighted that South Africa has been recognised in some of the UK’s most prestigious consumer travel awards, as a result of our continuous PR and marketing efforts in the UK. To have been highly commended in the Family Traveller Awards feels particularly rewarding following the recent announcement that South Africa is relaxing its immigration requirements for children entering the destination. We look forward to welcoming even more families from the UK and Ireland and worldwide to experience our wonderful country.’
