Joburg still top global destination in Africa Posted on 5 December 2018 Tags:Johannesburg The city of Johannesburg has once again come out as the top global destination in Africa, according to the recently-released MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. Joburg remains Africa’s most popular urban destination for the fifth consecutive year as shown by a breakdown of the index by travel news site Tourism Update. The index assesses the influx of visitors to over a hundred global destinations in the previous year. Cape Town and Polokwane reportedly ranked third and sixth respectively when it came to the highest overnight visitor expenditure, with the former still bringing in the greatest numbers for long-haul visitors to the country. Also read: 10 really affordable summer stays close to Joburg It’s no surprise that Cairo is among the African cities to rank on MasterCard’s top 23 destinations on the continent, but Durban also features on the list. Tourism Update quoted the city’s mayor Herman Mashaba as saying, ‘Johannesburg is one of the continent’s most significant metropolises for business, trade, investment, and leisure’.
