In photos: Phuket,Thailand Posted on 24 October 2018 Tags:Phuket, Thailand Phuket is a popular tourist destination, particularly for South Africans. It offers islands, beaches, clear water, cheap accommodation and it’s convenient, as we don’t require a visa to enter the country. I spent 10 days island hopping, negotiating to get the cheapest items for souvenirs and quenching my thirst on a variety of unusual beers. Phuket is both an island and a province, the largest in Thailand. The currency is the Thai Baht. Most of the population is Buddhist. Image by Ondela Mlandu Nightlife in Phuket only ends at 6 am in the morning. Bangla Road, which can be compared to Cape Town’s Long Street has many bars and restaurants. From the ladies dancing on table tops to the lady boys, there are displays that may come as a shock to your system if you’re unfamiliar with such things; Phuket has delicious spicy food and an array of International meals from all around the world. Try the local restaurants for an authentic Thai food experience. Images by Ondela Mlandu A visit to Old Phuket Town is a must! This part of town has museums and Sino-Portuguese architecture with many art galleries, showcasing Thai works; Tiger is one of the beer brands that goes for an average of 80 Baht (R35) a beer. Images by Ondela Mlandu Phi Phi Island is one of the best snorkelling spots. The water is warm and there are fish in abundance for your viewing pleasure. Image by Ondela Mlandu Tuk tuks taxis are everywhere in Phuket. The prices vary according to the drivers but be sure to negotiate before settling for any price. You must book a tour ferry to get to the island. Bookings can be done at any travel company in Phuket. You see how they are prepared, extracted from the shell, baked to temperature and then roasted. At the end of the tour, you are get to taste the many flavours. Images by Ondela Mlandu The Phuket Big Buddha near Chalong Temple sits at 400m above sea level. Thai Buddhist temples are distinctive with their bright gold and red colours.
