Sneak peek: gear in June issue Posted on 7 June 2013 This month’s issue of Getaway Magazine is bursting with great gear news and reviews for winter. Winter is upon us, we cannot deny it any longer, especially with the awful hail setting in in Cape Town and snow beginning to fall in Sutherland. That’s why I decided to suss out the best beanies and thermal gear to keep the cold at bay for the June issue. Warmest ears Woolworths Russian Trooper hat The Woolworths Russian Trooper hat is my absolute favourite. It’ll give you the confidence to sit outside on a cold desert night. It’s a big fluffy piece of headgear that straps on under the chin and covers your ears comfortably. You can pin up the faux fur sides, but unfortunately the hat doesn’t sit very well when done up. It’s a bit bulky to pack into a small backpack, but if you’re off on an overland adventure or heading into the chilly Drakensburg you’ll be grateful to have it. Costs R160. Woolworths, tel 0860-022-002, www.woolworths.co.za. Wool-wicking sock Wool fusion socks Material – 47% new wool; 34% nylon/polyamide; 18% polypropylene; 1% lycra/elastine This Wool Fusion Summit sock is a heavyweight shaped sock designed for high mountain and winter expeditions. It’s good for skiing as it’s made from 47% wool, which has natural wicking properties. The sock has dense cushioning for warmth and comfort, but may get too hot for the very active skier. They are also shin height, which will chafe if your ski boot sits in the same place. However, the pleated ribbing around the ankle is nice and the socks won’t slip down. Costs R130.
