5 reasons to plant trees in Zambia with Greenpop

Posted on 7 June 2013

Last year, Greenpop rolled out their ambitious Trees for Zambia reforestation project. It was not an easy task – getting volunteers from South Africa and abroad to Livingstone to plant thousands of trees in the Zambian heat. But the people at Greenpop pulled it off with both passion and effectivity, planting a total of 4 135 trees over three weeks. This year, they are doing it again and it promises to be even bigger and better than last year.

I was only there for a week last year, and by the end of it, wished I could stay longer. The days are busy and often challenging but Greenpop is an organisation that brings fun to all that they do. The atmosphere at the planting sites and at basecamp was always upbeat, often silly. Smiling faces were the norm and thanks to delicious food, roaring fires, documentary screenings, games and live music, we were always entertained.

This year, I am lucky enough to be going again, for two of the project’s three week duration. Here are five reasons I cannot wait to go!

1. Victoria Falls

Last year, volunteers got to plant trees in the Victoria Falls National Park, making their mark on one of the seven natural wonders of the world. We also got to indulge in Livingstone’s adventure activities – whitewater rafting, bungee jumping and helicopter flips to name a few.

2. Tree-planters are an awesome bunch

I was happily surprised by how easy it was to mingle at last year’s project. New comers are met with kindness and humour and its not long before you feel part of the Greenpop family.

3. Live music

Every Friday during the project Greenpop hosts a live music concert with performers from South Africa and its neighbouring countries. Last year, we were treated to Jeremy Loops & Co, Chikenbus Band and Touchwood amongst others. It turned into one hell of a party and I for one cannot wait to do it again.

4. Forming a community

By planting at different sites, we were introduced to lots of Livingstone locals committed to making a difference. Volunteers and community members worked together to reforest critical areas, forming a network of change makers that I was proud to be a part of.

5. Basecamp

Greenpop went all out to create a basecamp that made us feel at home. Lanterns surrounded the stage, wooden sign posts dotted the footpaths and there were countless spots to relax and read a book. It was the perfect place to return after a hard day’s planting. A fun and cosy home away from home.

Check out the video from Trees for Zambia 2012. It captures perfectly the spirit of the initiative.

See you in Zambia!
