Hit the spot at Market on Main in Johannesburg’s Maboneng Precinct

Posted on 5 September 2012

While many Joburgers still keep their distance from the inner city on weekends, others flock to the buzzing Maboneng Precinct. There are a host of activities in the precinct, including a spa, restaurants, a cinema, shops and the ever-popular Market on Main (ranked in our top Johannebsurg foodie hotspots), which runs every Sunday from 10h00 – 15h00 and the first Thursday night of each month from 19h00 – 23h00.

There is no parkade so you’ll have to park on the road, but there is enough action about to make you feel safe. If you’d like to make a day out of it, visit Cocoon in the City (also in the Maboneng Precinct) for an early morning yoga session and then head to Market on Main to satisfy that rumbling tummy.

The market has been developed in a newly converted early 1900s warehouse and is situated in Arts on Main, within the Maboneng Precinct. It offers food, furniture and fashion, with the emphasis being on local production.   You’ll get to taste SA’s finest, including Indian curries, fish and chips and boerie rolls. If you’d prefer to do your tasting at home, there are many vendors selling breads, cheeses and pickles- to name just a few.

I’d recommend arriving hungry. Start with some Asian spring rolls, then move on to the Mexican stall for some nachos, and finally head to one of the plentiful cake stalls for a brownie or a red velvet cupcake. Wash that all down with some fine, raw hot chocolate.

Once you’re done, indulge in some retail therapy. The upper deck of the market offers trendy South African clothing, including vintage and second hand items.

Finally, end off your day with some Ethiopian tea under the olive trees.
