Getaway unveils its ride for the Put Foot Rally Posted on 10 May 2011 We are pretty sure everybody has been waiting with bated breath to hear what chariot the Getaway crew would be rolling out in this year’s Put Foot Rally. Well, it’s here “¦ and we didn’t even have to visit downtown Boksburg to get it pimped out. Our “˜international van of mystery’ is a fully kitted VW Amorok sponsored by 4×4 Mega World, who have embarked on a joint venture with Volkswagen South Africa to create the ultimate luxury overlanding vehicle. This bakkie (a first from VW) can tow just about anything, go up a hill with a ton (literally) on the back, features terrain flattening Old Man Emu suspension, differential lock, dual battery, seriously chunky tyres and off-road ground covering capabilities second only to a peeved pachyderm. It also sports a fully-functioning off-road 4×4 bullbar/spotlight/ARB winch combo that looks tougher than Victor Matfield’s beard, and is probably more useful too. Other extras include an African Outback canopy, spare wheel carrier and an ARB compressor. Now, we’re not saying that we actually need all of this – our awesome driver/navigator combo could find their way out of a egg box in a hot wheels toy – we’re just letting you know so that you don’t get a skrik when those blerrie bright spotlights come dondering past your tent at half past clock in the morning, as we get going for the day’s leg. Why so early, you ask? Because we’ve got beds. And they’re not inside, they’re on top. You won’t find us scouting the land for a flat spot to pitch our tent – there’s plenty of space on top of the customized African Outback roof rack for our crew’s canvas palace, and enough room inside the extra wide drawer system to fit all our gear and the last three years’ issues of Getaway magazine “¦ because we also like to read on road trips. Not just tough, smart.
