A winter escape to Wild Clover Farm

Posted on 26 June 2014

I really didn’t think it was possible to go on a game drive and spot incredible wildlife, while admiring a spectacular view of Table Mountain. Little did I know, just a 30-minute drive from Cape Town (via the N1 to R304), there is a tranquil place called Wild Clover Farm where you can escape the bustling city.

The cottages

We received a warm welcome at our self-catering cottage with a bottle of Kleine Rust wine, which we enjoyed on a perfectly still, cool winter afternoon with a breathtaking view of the farm with Table Mountain in the distance.

The modern, clean and cozy, open-plan cottage is perfect for a couple or a family of four. Each semi-detached cottage has everything you need with a fully equipped kitchen, a double bed and assembled sleeper couch complete with warm bedding, towels, and toiletries. And, they add that extra touch. As a former super yacht stewardess, the novelty of having someone fold the toilet paper for you will never grow old.

The beer

The Wild Clover Brewery is a hidden gem in the emerging South African craft beer market. As a traveller who enjoys sampling local beers, I was blown away by Wild Clover’s top quality beer range that is produced on site. The micro brewery offers a variety of four brews including the Blind Mole, Double Owl, Eagle Weiss and Black Dog. Beer tasting costs R20 and is well worth it.

The food

The Eatery is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner and uses fresh, local produce from nearby farms. The menu boasts a wide variety of meals but specializes in pizzas that will make you salivate as you read descriptions. We ordered half a ‘Da Don’ and half a ‘Forester’s’ pizza and it was the perfect pizza with a thin base, generously layered in fresh toppings and minimal cheese. We then upgraded the ‘Plain Jane Burger’ to a ‘Stacked Burger’ which is topped with a delicious house relish and oak-smoked bacon. And, how could we resist their local beer and wine while enjoying the live music?

To top it all off, we ordered one of their trademark Bar-One dessert, to share. Chewy, sweet pastry filled with melted Bar One chocolate and topped with a scoop of vanilla ice-cream – it’s an absolute must!

The wildlife

On Sunday morning, our game ranger, Gerrit, shared his vast knowledge of the area and its inhabitants, while driving us around the Villiera Wildlife Sanctuary. We spotted a wide variety of game including springbok, zebra, giraffe, eland, wildebeest, kudu and many bird species.

As their slogan says, a visit to Wild Clover Farm is undoubtedly ‘time well spent.’
